Marks of a Leader: Reflection and Responsibility

August 6, 2012

This summer I began reading Ruth Haley Barton’s Strengthening the Soul of Your Leadership: Seeking God in the Crucible of Ministry. It is a fantastic book that looks at leadership and ministry alongside the story of Moses. I was looking forward to reading it since a number of friends had highly recommended it. However it is taking me more time than normal to read through this book, simply because so many powerful thoughts on ministry and leadership are included here. I would like to share one excerpt here (a quote from Parker Palmer the author included) that has been a sobering reminder of why it is so important, as a ministry leader, to value the practice of reflection and also to take responsibility for who we are (inside) and how we act (outside).

A leader is a person who must take special responsibility for what’s going on inside him- or herself, inside his or her consciousness, lest the act of leadership create more harm than good. -Parker Palmer (38)

Wow! Thank you! I always wanted to write on my website something like that. Can I take a part of your post to my blog?
