Signs of Sanity

November 2, 2010

I was not able to attend the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear on Saturday (I had to settle for watching the video clips). I really looked forward to seeing the signs people created for the rally, and there were some really good ones! Below are a few of my favorites:

The sign work at the rally definitely showed some creativity (to be fair, there also were some less tasteful signs too). And kudos to Jon Stewart for stepping out of character to share a “Moment of Sincerity.” It reminded me of Stephen Colbert’s recent testimony before the congressional committee (where he broke character speaking about migrant workers). I love that gifted comedians are demonstrating that there’s a better way than the usual fear and smear patterns of American political discourse. Perhaps some humor can restore a little sanity?

Tomorrow is election day, and whatever happens will happen. But after the votes are counted and everything settles down (except on 24-hr news outlets, of course), may there be an increase in cooperation and in civil discourse. Maybe we can learn something about the political process and about each other? And maybe, just maybe, we somehow will finally find a way…to adopt the metric system.*

*My elementary school teachers said the switch to Metric would take place by the time my class reached high school. It’s now been 20 years since high school…and I still can’t figure out the temperature in Canada.
